Resources for Academic Leaders and Chairs

This page provides critical resources and timeline updates for Academic Leaders (Chairs, Deans, Unit Heads, and Program Directors) who evaluate faculty during the annual review process.

📌 Note: The FAR system standardizes data collection, but policy remains localized. Please continue to check your campus-specific Faculty Affairs webpages for unique guidelines, deadlines, and merit review criteria.

Please use the following links to jump down to different sections of the webpage:

For awareness, and to share with any faculty your department/unit/school, we also recommend that any academic leaders review the information available on the webpage for Individual Faculty Members including capabilities and constraints of the system, guidance on where to place certain professional activities, and FAQs.

FAR Impact on Faculty Evaluation Workflow and Timeline

Each campus establishes its own specific evaluation windows. We recommend contacting your campus Faculty Affairs office directly to confirm your upcoming review calendar.

What is Changing (and What is Staying the Same)

The traditional review workflow relies on faculty submitting self-evaluations to leaders, leaders evaluating the faculty, and departments/units/schools submitting those final reviews to merit committees or campus leadership.

What Evaluators Will Receive

Once faculty generate their self-evaluation report within the FAR system, they will download and submit it to your department, unit, or school using your current submission methods (e.g., email, box folder), along with any standard supporting documentation.

As an evaluator, the only change is the formatted report you will receive. Unless otherwise directed by your campus Faculty Affairs office, you can expect to receive a clean MS Word or PDF version of the standardized FAR report.

Resources to Guide Your Faculty in FAR

Active advocacy from academic leaders is the single most important factor in a smooth system transition. To help you seamlessly message this change to your departments without adding to your workload, we have developed a Leadership Toolkit of copy-and-paste communication templates:

Directing Faculty to Training

Please actively encourage your faculty to explore the Resources for Individual Faculty webpage, which contains micro-demo videos, system documentation, and schedules for live synchronous training workshops. We have also listed the training schedule below for your reference, including academic-leader specific training.

If you or your faculty encounter technical issues, please route inquiries to gu360help@georgetown.edu or reference your campus-specific contacts below.

Future of FAR

While the system is currently limited to generating streamlined faculty self-evaluations, centralizing this activity data opens powerful future opportunities to save leadership time and better showcase institutional scholarship.
